Pet Gates: Measure the Opening at Every Hardware Contact Point

Compare installation method, extension compatibility, actual opening geometry, and the model’s intended location before buying.

Published 2026-10-14 · Pet Supply Notes editorial desk · Research-based buying guide

We have not performed hands-on testing of the products discussed. Manufacturer references and official guidance support the documented information below; comparison exercises are our editorial guidance.

A doorway width measured at one height may not describe where a pet gate's hardware contacts the frame. Baseboards, trim, and uneven openings matter to fit. Start with the exact manual rather than a generic expandable range. This guide does not promise containment or present a pet gate as child-safety equipment.

Read installation method before dimensions

Identify whether the selected model uses pressure, hardware mounting, or another arrangement and follow its instructions. Carlson publishes a model-specific manual directory and walk-through gate information. Use the exact current model, including its regional version, rather than a similar photograph.

Measure the opening where the manual requires, keeping units consistent. A product's advertised maximum width may involve separately sold extensions or a particular configuration. Do not assume trim or a baseboard can be ignored because the main span seems to fit.

Check extensions and opening access

List every required extension, mounting component, and supplied part. Read exact compatibility rather than assuming same-brand pieces fit all gates. Consider the walk-through opening, door swing, and any threshold as part of the household route.

Do not improvise mounting pads, remove structural parts, or use the gate in a location its instructions do not support. A small-pet opening, if present, has its own intended operation; a photograph is not a guarantee of which animals can pass or remain contained.

Compare complete cost and intended role

Include required compatible extensions and mounting parts in current delivered cost. A starter price without them can be misleading. Read care, inspection, and replacement guidance, and check seller return terms before opening or installing the equipment.

No strength, latch, or containment test is claimed by this site. Manufacturer statements should remain attributed, and individual animal behavior can require appropriate professional advice. Do not infer a baby-safety role from a pet-product label. If the opening geometry, location restrictions, or parts remain unclear, ask the maker before buying. The useful result may be one fully identified gate configuration or a decision to use another arrangement until the installation can be resolved. A larger advertised range alone does not establish a correct or dependable installation.
